Hopscotch reminds me of lines drawn with chalk, of falling over at the last block but dusting and picking myself up, of scraped knees and a childhood where we played real games, not virtual ones.
Hopscotch reminds me of loads of time spent on the playground, lots of memories. This game exercised the mind and the body and helped develop lots of sweet memories with the friends.
It actually reminds me of two things
1. The game which needed nothing but a piece of chalk to draw the squares, a flat stone (which resulted in a few fights on whose flatter) played along with a group of boisterous kids scaring the one hopping so that their turn would come faster, scrapped knees and twisted ankles, confusing the younger ones that 5 came before 4, and having fun in fresh air, then running home to drink nice cold water and taking back a bottle for friends waiting outside :)
2. It also reminds me of what a teacher told about my class note book to my mother 'Her work reminds me of hopscotch, only that its total hotchpotch' Err..dont ask me the connection, but everytime I hear the word hopscotch, I remember my English teacher!
Reminds me of this beautiful poetry by Robert E. Blackwell
Pebble drops
Foot hops
Summer play
Sunny day
Jump squares
No cares
Playin’ hopscotch
School grounds
Kid sounds
Nimble feet
Gravel’s heat
Turn around
Falling down
Playin’ hopscotch
Little buddy
Quick study
Soft bones
Smooth stones
Skies blue
Us two
Playin’ hopscotch
Night falls
Mama calls
Cozy bed
Sleepy head
Next time
Same rhyme
Playin’ hopscotch
Hopscotch reminds me of chalk, pigtails, complaints about brothers pushing, rains washing away the lines, innocence and tons of friends! As Mary Hopkins sang - Those were the days my friend.......
Hopscotch reminds me of my sis who used to call it HopCock when she was 3 in her toddler lisp :D

Hopscotch is the connecting link to childhood, laughter and endless hours of dreams. The moments of absolute patience we learnt from trying to balance on that one foot and being able to win it all. The cackle of girly laughter and the teasing drones of the boys who thought this was a silly game. It was the graphics of our younger moments and will always stay etched as the chalkpowder seeped into the tarred, concrete and stone ground.
hopscotch was one of those games those days that crossed boundaries of age. We played it, our mom played it, our grandmom played it.... My mom would join us teaching her childhood version of hopscotch. Our school teachers would sometimes join us in the midst of much cheers from we students. It is a game that beat all the addictive games of today and had the dual purpose of keeping us healthy and light.
childhood, fun, competitiveness, nostalgia, all the good things in life conjure up with this word.
Simple lines traced on the mud or little boxes drawn using a piece of chalk or charcoal.. a flat pebble.. bunch of carefree kids engrossed in play for long hours.. loads and loads of fun out there in the sun.. the magic, the thrill, the joy.. perhaps no playstation or Xbox can ever match...
Prize or no prize but thanks Kiran for bringing back those happy memories of the yore.

The first image that comes to my mind when I hear Hopscotch is that of my 4 yr old daughter holding her cousin's hand (also 4 yrs old) and giving him tips on how to balance. Nevermind, she herself was unable to hop along and balance. The little fella listened to her attentively and tried hoping along ... although his attempt looked like tribal dance. Such a cute scene ...
Of course Hopscotch also reminds me of the time I fell on my face and scarred it, the time I spent with my colony kids in a small town and the terms "Bachcha" (flat stone used to play Hopscotch was called bachcha.) and "Airplane" (one of the versions of Hopscotch)
Hopscotch reminds me of childhood days without TV, internet or mobiles. Of never telling the parents, ‘I’m bored’. Of neighbouring kids who became friends for life. There are no pictures taken but there are memories. We didn’t use stones or pebbles but baby awalas, mangos and chickoos, whatever grew in the season. It made the game tougher because unlike stones, this rolled more. We fought more, played less, got angry, walked off swearing never to play with cheaters again and came back the next day for another game.
Hopscotch is nostalgia...looking forward to the time after school, when girls of the neighbourhood will gather n without even discussng wat to play, will draw the hopscotch on the ground n strt. Such was the popularity of this game.
At present, this word reminds me what i am NOT supposed to do- hopscotch!- 5 months pregnant,n desperately hoping(hopping? :-) ) for a girl child, i sooo want to win one of the top 2 items as a lucky charm...make me win...indulge a pregnant mad cow plz...:-D - Mini
Funnily enough, 'hopscotch' reminds me not so much of the hopping games we played as children (some quite complicated) but of the frog-hopping my son and I have been known to do on occasion. We get down on the floor and pretend we're frogs. :)
‘Hopscoth’ reminds me of little boxes drawn using piece of chalk, a pebble and our constant attention to get the flatter pebble. (Even on our way to school)
Terms such as “Kuccha Limbu” and “Pakka Limbu”. (“Kuccha limbus” are the ones who cannot play well but still wanted to play and they were given some concessions while playing).
Teaching my younger brother how to balance and hop (trying to pull him in “Pakka Limbu” league.
Also taking initiative to draw boxes so that I can draw bigger boxes wherever a particular combination is difficult for me or my brother.
Our balancing acts, our laughter, our fights – whether one touches the lines or not?
Oh my god this list is just endless.

The word hopscotch reminds me of -
Childhood
Innocence
Fun times with no worries
Stapu - An indian version of the game
It just brings back lots of memories and then I smile..a big happy smile.
And then I wonder if my daughter will also play this game when she grows up? I hope she does. And then I will also play with her and relive my childhood days.
'Hopscotch' seemed like a distant forgotten term to me. An endearing term that was so precious to me. Seemed like an half remembered dream, that i struggled to place.
And lo, I remembered, it was a game as a child I would play at that wee age. We would all gather round to take turns to play it and it brought back happy & beautiful memories. The laughter of children, the smiles on their faces and it didn't matter if we won or lost. We played and Oh! we played our hearts out. The bated breath await. The shrill joy seeking scream. Then was the time. The time of merriment and surpassing happiness.
Will it ever come back. Yes ! It shall !
We have left a legacy for our children and for those yet to come. We need to strive to keep it. And nurture their dreams with the hopes that we were better men once and just enjoyed the simpler and finer things in life. And so we tread ahead with the firm faith that we once hopped, skipped and jumped.
Hopscotch!! Well it brings to my mind everything associated with my one and a half year old angel! Her laughter, her tantrums, her cry, her babbling! All that is hotch potch!! All of which means the world to her! Every second of that hopscotch is priceless! Her holding my finger, her giggle, her little bunny teeth, her communication with the street dogs, her acknowledgement smiles occasionally which is my consolation prize! My little angel you mean the mean the world to me!!
I am a surgeon so the very first thought I had was a notch...a hopscotch NOTCH...those lil notches my baby has in her chubby chubby arms and thighs..I am miles away from her right now and reading your post has brought tears to my eyes...I deserve a butter'scotch' now Kiran!
