The brat, much to my disappointment and eternal embarrassment, does not know to cycle without support wheels. I have never learnt to cycle meself and I was terribly keen that he knew this basic skill. Likewise, I don't know how to cook either and I would rather that he develops a love for cooking that would stand him in good stead should he be on his own at any point and compelled to wield a skillet, with no takeaway in the immediate vicinity.
Coming back to skills he should learn, I was also always keen that he learn swimming. Yes, you guessed right, I've never learnt to swim either. Sigh. The skills I don't have outnumber the few I have by a mile. But then I digress again.
For his birthday when I harped on him getting a bicycle, he insisted on PS2 and PSP and so he did. The pater, while keen on teaching him swimming, slacks off when it comes to cycling. And me, poor me, cannot do the running behind, catching and supporting that is essential for cycling training.
The other day the good doctor, catching the raised eyebrow, head gesturing hints I was not so subtly dropping from behind the brat, spoke to him about exercise and such and when I put in cycling as one of the must dos he supported me enthusiastically. "You will become taller with cycling," he told the brat, given that the lack of inches in the height is a sore point with brat, despite the girth being generous with them inches.
The brat did not debate further. After a few days I spoke about cycling, telling him with great seriousness how, should he cycle for an hour everyday, he would definitely become taller than his father before he knew it and then we would have to find another home with a higher ceiling because of him bumping his head against it and such exaggerations. He thought long and hard and looked at me with that expression I've now come to realise is the one that says, "Ha, Mom, I'm so going to pwn you."
"Mamma," he began, "Yer sure cycling makes you taller?"
"Yes, of course," I declaimed. "It is excercise for your legs and will make your legs longer and stronger."
He narrowed his eyes and titled his head. "Den wai Salman Khan is so shord. He does so much of cycling na, yu tole me, from the shooting in d studio to his house, everytime."
Err. Errm. Any answers, anyone?
